INTERNATIONAL CANINE SEMEN BANK CENTERS - MAIN OFFICE

International Canine Semen Bank (ICSB) was founded by Professor Carrol C. Platz, Jr. ICSB's program is based on techniques developed by Professor Platz.

Through Professor Platzs' 35 years of research at the University of Oregon Medical School, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M University and continuing in the ICSB laboratory, ICSB has produced thousands of puppies using fresh frozen canine semen. ICSB and associates were first in producing litters registered by the AKC, The American Field Dog Association and the National Greyhound Association, and assisted in developing the guidelines used by these organizations for registering litters produced from frozen semen. They have produced litters from frozen semen that had been stored for 34 years prior to thawing and insemination at ICSB.

Under Professor Platz's direction, this research continues and provides the dog breeder with the most successful program available using fresh, fresh chilled and frozen canine semen and artificial insemination using non-surgical and surgical procedures.

To get a better understanding of ICSB services, listed herein are some of the services and questions that are of interest to breeders.

What does International Canine Semen Bank™ Do?

ICSB staff includes skilled professionals who are also successful dog breeders and exhibitors. As such, they understand the needs of the dog fancy.

The ICSB provides for the breeder:

  2. Experienced veterinarians for artificial inseminations and surgical inseminations.
  3. Consultation available to veterinarians and dog breeders.
  4. Our 3 exclusives: 'ICSB Extended Cryo-Kit', 'ICSB Cryo-Kit' for shipping semen to us for freezing and storage and the 'ICSB Epi-Kit' to ship dog testes for retrieval/freezing of canine sperm.
  5. The most complete semen evaluation available for your stud dog, including acrosome integrity testing.
  6. Artificial insemination products and supplies.
  7. Media and buffers for adjusting or correcting canine semen imbalance and contaminants.
  8. DNA testing for registry and paternity testing (all results confidential).
  9. Frozen canine semen shipping to foreign countries, including Australia, England, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Sweden, Norway, Poland, South Africa and many others.
  10. Electro-ejaculation equipment for collecting semen from dogs where conventional collection methods are not successful.

As time goes by dog breeders will no doubt see canine competitors come and go, but rest assured ICSB has the history, experience, long-term commitment and support to provide our services to dog breeders worldwide for many decades to come.

How to use your vials efficiently.

When we collect and freeze semen from your dog, we present you with a quote of the number of vials at the end of the freezing process. Most people say "great!" or "darn!" However, in the end, everyone always asks, at least once, "What does the number of vials mean?", and "How many do I need?", and "How many are used for an insemination?"

Here are some answers.

What does the number of vials mean?

1. The number of vials indicates how many inseminations you have available. So, if we froze 4 vials, there are 4 possible inseminations.

How many do I need?

2. Each vial is packaged based on the thaw evaluation and contains a selected number of live, motile, normal sperm cells. Our packaging requirements are the highest in the frozen semen industry. After 40 years of reseach, Prof. Platz has determined the optimal amount of cells needed for a successful breeding. A specific number of live, motile, normal sperm cells is used for each breed of dog. Any abnormal sperm or loss of motilitly is noted and adjustments are made at the time of packaging.

How many are used for an insemination?

3. 1 vial is used per insemination. This translates to 1 vial for a surgical insemination. We recommend 2 vials for a vaginal or trans-cervial insemination (1 per insemination-typically 2 inseminations are done for vaginal and trans-cervical breedings.)

WHY IS MY VET ASKING FOR 2 VIALS FOR A SURGICAL INSEMINATION?

ICSB can not speak for other facility success rates, but our success rate is in the 90th percentile using 1 vial of semen when surgical insemination is performed, we are monitoring her cycle with serum progesterone levels and our timing and thawing procedures are followed. The system that we have developed requires only 1 vial of semen per insemination. From 1-3cc's of thawed semen should be inserted into the uterine horns, depending on the dog breed. The bitch is producing from 1-20 eggs on average. The semen inseminated into a dog that produces the high-end on those eggs are approximately 175-250million live motile, normal sperm cells. If those can't fertilize this number of eggs,, an extra 175-250 million is not likely going to make a difference.

The Puppy Pak provides the easiest system and prevents damage to sperm cells due to over-handling during the collection, packaging and shipping process.

  3. Place the semen-media in the Cryo-Kit

ICSB-Main Office has the first and only consistently successful system for shipping canine semen for processing and storage. Epididymal Sperm Harvist Kits
ICSB-OREGON™

ICSB-OREGON offers unique products and servivces that have been developed from over 35 years of research. Now you can continue your breeding program, from remote locations and ship your dogs testes after neutering or an un-foreseen event. Many people whose dogs are difficult to collect can also send the testes in for harvest. Harvesting allows ICSB to extract the sperm cells and freeze them for later use.

ICSB EPI-KIT

The ICSB Epi-Kit is an amazing opportunity for breeders and pet owners to preserve that special friend and stud dog that cannot be replaced. The sperm cells that are extracted, (when shipped and cared for properly) have an excellent chance of survival, even in situations where the dog has died traumatically or has been diagnosed with a terminal disease.

The staff at ICSB has been extensively trained in this delicate and little known procedure. Research and training has been done exclusively by Prof. Carrol C. Platz, Jr.

When you wish to ship the testes from an animal that is neutered, euthanized or has expired from an accident or diseases please call our office for prices and procedures that your vet should follow for optimum results.
